Exploring Theory, Enhancing Practice: Autonomy across the Disciplines

Welcome to the Website of the Independent Learning Association Japan 2007 Conference.

We would like to invite you to join us in Japan for the 3rd international conference of the Independent Learning Association. The Association’s previous conferences in Melbourne and Auckland brought together language educators from around the globe who demonstrated a passion for promoting learner autonomy and creating learning environments that facilitate independent language learning.

The theme of our upcoming conference is Exploring Theory, Enhancing Practice: Autonomy across the Disciplines. We are confident that this theme will enable us to expand the theoretical base and invigorate practice in our field by fostering interdisciplinary discussion and identifying promising new research directions.

We are delighted that Kanda University of International Studies is hosting the conference, particularly since 2007 is the 20th anniversary of its founding. Kanda University of International Studies has pioneered significant developments in independent language learning in Japan and boasts a state-of-the-art Self Access Learning Centre. Kanda University is situated amongst the modern skyscrapers of Makuhari, Chiba, within easy commuting distance of central Tokyo and just 30 minutes from Tokyo Narita airport. This area, known as Kaihin Makuhari, has several world-class hotels (see the Accommodation link), as well as numerous cafes and restaurants, all within 10 minutes walk of the University.

You will not want to miss this academically and culturally stimulating event set in a quiet corner of a dynamic metropolis.
