Conveners

Lucy Cooker, Kanda University of International Studies: Lucy Cooker began her career teaching English in Japan and then studied for her Masters degree in Applied Linguistics at the University of Edinburgh. In 1999 she returned to Japan as a Lecturer at Kanda University of International Studies where she set up the self-access learning centre (SALC). The KUIS SALC is now a state-of-the-art learning facility catering to the needs of over 3000 students with a team of dedicated learning advisors. In 2003 the SALC won a MEXT Best Practice award for the learning advisory system. Lucy was responsible for founding the Japan Association of Self-Access Learning (JASAL) in 2005, and was subsequently elected Vice President. She is continuing with her work as a Consultant to the SALC whilst studying for a full-time PhD with Barbara Sinclair and Richard Pemberton at the University of Nottingham, UK.

Sara Cotterall, Akita International University: Sara Cotterall has been working in the field of language education since 1980.
After teaching in Europe, China and Australia, Sara joined the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at Victoria University of Wellington (VUW), New Zealand in 1987. At VUW Sara delivered postgraduate courses in Second Language Acquisition and Language Teaching Methodology, as well as courses in academic writing and English for academic purposes.
Sara was convener of AILA’s Research Network on Learner Autonomy in Language Learning from 1996 to 2002 and has an extensive record of publications and conference presentations.
In 2005 Sara was appointed Associate Professor at Akita International University (AIU), Japan. At AIU Sara teaches courses in Independent Learning and Communication. She also works as a language adviser at the university’s Satellite Centre for Independent Learning.

Garold Murray, Akita International University: Garold Murray has been working in the area of independent language learning in Canada and Japan for the past 20 years. In Canada he developed independent learning programs for elementary, junior high and high school students. He has also worked with language teachers in both pre-service and in-service teacher education programmes.
In 2004,Garold was appointed Professor at Akita International University (AIU). In this position he established AIU’s Centre for Independent Language Learning and developed its two self-access centres, one of which offers independent learning programs to the general public.
Garold is currently convener of AILA’s Research Network on Learner Autonomy in Language Learning and President of the Japan Association of Self-Access Learning. He has presented and published nationally and internationally, primarily on independent language learning and life history research.
