FAQs about Japan

Dress code

The dress code in Japan is generally more business-like than would perhaps be the case in other countries. Despite this, the Independent Learning Association Conference has traditionally been a relaxed and friendly event rather than a formal and austere occasion. Therefore it would be acceptable for delegates to attend presentations wearing smartish casual attire (e.g. jeans and a shirt); however this is an academic conference and most presenters would probably adhere to a more formal, business dress-code on the day they are presenting.

Money

Japan is a cash economy. Bring yen with you (not dollars) and bear in mind that changing travellers cheques in banks is not easy as the service in banks is extremely slow. Most places do now accept credit cards.

Japanese culture

Don’t be surprised if you approach a taxi and the door automatically opens. When you enter the taxi, don’t close the door, the driver will close it automatically too!

Smoking on the street is not considered good manners. You should only smoke outside in designated smoking areas. Most restaurants allow smoking in all or part of the restaurant.
